What to Do When You Feel Like Giving Up

2 Corinthians 4:16–18

Ever sat in your car before going inside because you needed a minute?

The day was over, but the pressure wasn’t. People needed you. Responsibilities were waiting. And you wondered, “How much longer can I keep doing this?”

Paul knew what it meant to be worn down. He had faced beatings, imprisonment, hunger, and danger while serving Christ. Yet he wrote, “We faint not.”

His reason for keeping going? God was renewing him, his suffering was serving an eternal purpose, and his present circumstances would not last forever.

That same hope can help us take the next faithful step.

🔄 1. Trust God’s Daily Renewal

“Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”
2 Corinthians 4:16, KJV

You can be worn down without being defeated.

Paul describes two things happening at once:

  • Outwardly, he was wasting away. Suffering was taking a toll on his body.
  • Inwardly, he was being renewed. God was strengthening his spiritual life.
  • This renewal happened daily. God was working while the hardship continued.

Think of an old house being restored inside. The worn exterior doesn’t reveal everything happening within.

Your exhaustion does not mean God has stopped working in you.

Paul prayed that believers would “be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man” (Ephesians 3:16).

💭 Ask yourself: Where is weariness making it hardest for me to be patient or remain faithful?

👣 Take one step: Before one demanding responsibility each day this week, pray: “Lord, renew me within and help me handle this faithfully.”

⚖️ 2. See Your Suffering in Light of Eternal Glory

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”
2 Corinthians 4:17, KJV

The glory ahead outweighs the trouble now.

Paul makes three comparisons:

Present sufferingComing gloryLight by comparisonFar greater in weightLasts for a limited timeLasts foreverIs working toward gloryIs the promised outcome

Picture a balance scale. A small weight moves it because that weight is real. But a much greater weight on the other side changes the balance completely.

Your suffering is real. God’s promised glory still outweighs it.

Some hardship lasts for years, even a lifetime. But it has an ending. Eternal glory does not.

And Paul says affliction “worketh for us.” God is making it serve an eternal purpose, even when we cannot explain how.

💭 Ask yourself: What good thing am I tempted to stop doing because it has become painful or discouraging?

👣 Take one step: Complete one act of faithfulness this week that you’ve been tempted to abandon. Serve someone, keep a commitment, or do the honest work in front of you.

👀 3. Fix Your Attention on What Lasts Forever

“The things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18, KJV

Today’s trouble is not your whole future.

A difficult relationship, a health concern, or pressure at work can fill your thoughts. Paul teaches us to keep God’s promised future in view.

  • What we see now is temporary. Present suffering belongs to a life that will end.
  • What God has promised is eternal. Resurrection and coming glory will outlast our trouble.
  • Our hope has a foundation. The God who raised Jesus has promised to raise his people too (2 Corinthians 4:14).

Like a family living at a temporary address, we can endure present difficulties knowing we will not be here forever.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
2 Corinthians 5:7, KJV

💭 Ask yourself: Which trouble keeps taking over my thoughts and making me forget God’s promises?

👣 Take one step: Carry a card with 2 Corinthians 4:18 written on it. Once each day, when you catch yourself dwelling on that trouble, read it and say: “This is what I’m facing today. It is not all God has ahead for me.”

📅 What Is Your Next Faithful Step?

Look at today’s square on a calendar. Some days, getting through that one square takes everything you have.

You don’t have to face every square today.

Remember:

  • God can renew you today.
  • Your suffering is not wasted.
  • His promised glory is still ahead.

Name the next faithful thing you need to do. Ask God for strength, and take that step.

✝️ This Hope Begins with Jesus

If you’re a believer: Bring your weariness to the Lord. Tell him where you’re struggling, and ask for strength to obey him today.

If you’ve never trusted Christ: The hope Paul describes rests on Jesus, who died for our sins, was buried, and rose again.

You cannot earn forgiveness through effort or hardship. Salvation is God’s gift, received through faith in Christ.

Turn from your sin and trust Jesus to forgive you and save you. You can call on him right where you are:

“Lord Jesus, I know I have sinned. I believe you died for my sins and rose again. I’m trusting you to forgive me and save me.”

The words of a prayer don’t save you. Jesus does.
