👀 Looking Unto Jesus

Hebrews 12:1–3
Most races begin with excitement 🏁
When the starting signal goes off, everyone feels strong. The energy is high, the crowd is cheering, and finishing seems very possible.
But as the race goes on, things change.
The legs get tired. The breathing gets harder. The distance feels longer than expected. At some point, the challenge is no longer starting the race. It is finishing it.
The Christian life often feels the same way.
Many people begin their walk with Christ with joy and enthusiasm 🙌 But somewhere along the way, the race becomes harder than expected. Discouragement shows up. Distractions pile up. Some even begin to wonder if they can keep going.
Hebrews 12 speaks directly into that moment. It reminds us that the race of faith is not finished by those who start fast, but by those who endure and keep their eyes fixed on Jesus ✝️
❓ How Do We Endure the Race of Faith?
Hebrews 12:1–3 gives us three clear, practical instructions for staying in the race.
🧱 1. Lay Aside What Holds You Back
“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us…” (Hebrews 12:1)
The writer points us back to the examples of faith in Hebrews 11. People like Abraham and Moses endured incredible hardship while trusting God. Their lives remind us that perseverance is possible 💪
But if we are going to endure like they did, we have to deal with what is holding us back.
⚖️ Weights
These are not always sinful. They are simply things that slow us down spiritually.
It might be:
- distractions 📱
- misplaced priorities
- habits that drain your time and focus
🕸️ Sin
Sin is different. It does not just slow you down. It trips you up.
It wraps around your life and makes it harder to move forward.
Think about a runner 🏃♂️ No one trains for a race while carrying extra weight. Every serious runner removes anything that might hold them back.
The same is true in the Christian life.
👉 Application:
If you feel stuck spiritually, take an honest look at what might be slowing you down. Ask God to show you anything that is holding you back and be willing to let it go.
🏃♂️ 2. Keep Running the Race God Has Given You
“…let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
The Christian life is not a sprint. It is a long race that requires endurance.
The word “patience” here means perseverance. It means continuing when:
- you are tired
- things are hard
- quitting feels easier
And notice this. The race is set before you.
That means your life is not random. Your challenges, your responsibilities, your season all belong to the race God has given you.
You are not called to run someone else’s race.
You are called to be faithful in yours 🙏
A marathon runner does not finish by sprinting the whole way. They finish by taking one step after another, even when it hurts.
👉 Application:
If you feel discouraged, do not quit. Stay faithful in the basics:
- keep praying 🙏
- keep reading your Bible 📖
- keep showing up
- keep obeying
Just take the next step.
👀 3. Keep Your Eyes Fixed on Jesus
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2)
This is the key to everything.
The word “looking” means to turn your attention away from everything else and fix it on one thing.
That one focus is Jesus ✝️
When we focus on:
- problems 😟
- pressure
- fear
we grow discouraged.
But when we focus on Christ, we find strength.
Why?
Because of who He is:
- He is the author of our faith. He started it.
- He is the finisher of our faith. He will complete it.
- He endured the cross for us ❤️
- He now reigns in victory 👑
The Bible says to “consider him… lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.”
In other words, if you lose sight of Jesus, you will lose heart.
Think about Peter walking on water 🌊
As long as his eyes were on Jesus, he was steady. But when he looked at the wind and waves, he began to sink.
Nothing changed about the storm. Only his focus changed.
👉 Application:
If you feel overwhelmed, shift your focus back to Christ.
Spend time with Him:
- in His Word 📖
- in prayer 🙏
- in worship 🎶
Endurance grows when your eyes stay on Jesus.
🏁 Finishing Well
There is a powerful story from the 1968 Olympic marathon.
A runner named John Stephen Akhwari was badly injured during the race. His leg was damaged, and every step was painful.
Most people would have quit.
But long after the winner had finished, Akhwari slowly entered the stadium and crossed the finish line.
When asked why he kept going, he said:
“My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race. They sent me 5,000 miles to finish the race.”
That is the kind of endurance Hebrews 12 calls us to 💥
The Christian life is not about starting well. It is about finishing faithfully.
🙌 Final Encouragement
If we want to endure the race of faith:
- Lay aside what holds you back
- Keep running the race God gave you
- Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus
Take a moment and ask yourself:
- What do I need to lay aside?
- Where do I need to keep going?
- What has taken my eyes off Jesus?
And then look back to Him.
He endured the cross.
He finished His race.
And He now reigns in victory 👑
✝️ A Final Invitation
It may be that the reason you feel so weary is because you have never truly begun the race of faith.
The Christian life does not begin with trying harder. It begins with trusting Christ.
Jesus died for your sins and rose again so that you could be forgiven and made right with God ❤️
If you have never trusted Him, you can today.
Turn from your sin.
Place your faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Receive the new life He offers.
And if you already know Him:
Keep running 🏃♂️
Lay aside what hinders you
Stay faithful
And keep your eyes on Jesus 👀
Because the race is hard, but the finish is worth it 🙌
