Remembering Until He Comes 🍞🍷

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you went there? 🤔
Or picked up your phone, unlocked it, and then stared at the screen wondering, “What was I about to do?”
We’ve all been there.
That’s why we rely on calendars 📅, reminders 📱, sticky notes 📝, and alarms ⏰. We know that if something is important, we need help remembering it.
But our greatest danger isn’t forgetting where we left our keys or what we needed at the grocery store.
Our greatest danger is allowing the greatest truth we’ve ever known to become so familiar that it no longer fills us with wonder.
That’s exactly why Jesus gave His church the Lord’s Supper.
The bread and the cup are much more than religious tradition. They are Christ’s loving invitation to remember Him until He comes again. ❤️
👀 Look Back to the Cross
Paul takes us back to the night Jesus was betrayed.
Think about that for a moment.
Jesus knew the cross was only hours away. He knew Judas would betray Him. He knew the suffering that awaited Him.
Yet instead of focusing on Himself, He lovingly gave His followers a simple meal that would help generations of believers remember Him.
The bread reminds us that Jesus willingly gave His body for us.
The cup reminds us that His blood established a new covenant, providing forgiveness, peace with God, and eternal redemption.
The Lord’s Table reminds us of something we should never forget.
Never get over the cross. ✝️
No matter how long you’ve been a Christian, you’ll never outgrow your need to remember what Jesus did for you.
📣 Look Around with the Gospel
Paul says that every time we eat the bread and drink the cup, we “shew the Lord’s death.”
That word simply means to proclaim or to declare.
In other words, every time the church observes the Lord’s Supper, we’re preaching a sermon without saying very much at all.
We’re declaring:
✅ Jesus came.
✅ Jesus died.
✅ Jesus paid for our sins.
✅ Jesus is the only hope for the world.
The gospel isn’t just the message that brought us to Christ.
It’s still the message that changes lives today.
May our church always be known for keeping Jesus and His cross at the center. ❤️
👑 Look Ahead with Hope
The Lord’s Supper doesn’t only point us backward.
It also points us forward.
Paul says we remember Christ’s death “till he come.”
Those three little words are filled with hope.
Every Communion service reminds us that we’re one step closer to seeing Jesus face to face.
One day there will be no more bread to break.
No more cup to drink.
No more need for reminders.
Faith will become sight. 🙌
The Savior we’ve remembered by faith will stand before us in glory.
What a day that will be!
❤️ A Few Questions to Consider
Before participating in the Lord’s Supper, it’s worth slowing down and asking ourselves a few honest questions.
- 🤍 Has the cross become so familiar that I’ve stopped marveling at Christ’s sacrifice?
- 📖 Is the gospel still shaping the way I live and the way I speak?
- 👑 Am I living with joyful expectation that Jesus could return at any moment?
The Lord’s Supper isn’t simply something we observe.
It’s an opportunity to renew our gratitude, refocus our hearts, and remember the One who gave everything to save us.
As we gather around the Lord’s Table, may we:
✝️ Look back with gratitude.
📣 Look around with confidence.
👑 Look ahead with expectation.
And through it all, may we faithfully do exactly what Jesus commanded:
“This do in remembrance of me.”
Until He comes. ❤️
