🏗️ Protecting What God Is Building

"I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called."
Ephesians 4:1 (KJV)

Have you ever noticed how carefully you treat something that's valuable?

🏡 Imagine finally moving into your dream home. You've spent months planning, years saving, and countless hours watching it take shape. Then the day finally comes... you get the keys!

Almost overnight, your perspective changes.

You lock the doors.

You replace the air filters.

You fix a small leak before it becomes a big problem.

Why?

Because it's your home now. Something valuable has been entrusted to you, and you want to take care of it.

The same principle is true in the Christian life.

⛪ God has entrusted us with something far more valuable than a house. He has entrusted us with His church.

While Jesus alone builds His church, every believer has the privilege and responsibility of protecting the unity He has already created.

In Ephesians 4:1-6, the Apostle Paul begins the practical section of his letter by showing us how every Christian can help protect what God is building.

🙌 1. Remember Your Calling

Paul begins with a simple word: "therefore."

That little word points us back to everything God has already done.

In the first three chapters of Ephesians, Paul reminds us that we've been chosen, redeemed, forgiven, adopted into God's family, and united together through Jesus Christ.

Only after reminding us of God's amazing grace does Paul say...

"Now, here's how you should live."

He urges believers to "walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called."

That doesn't mean we earn God's love.

❤️ We could never do that.

Instead, it means our daily lives should reflect the incredible grace we've already received.

When we remember who we are in Christ, it changes how we respond to other people.

It's much harder to demand our own way when we remember that before we're Republicans or Democrats... before we're young or old... before we're part of a ministry or Sunday school class...

👉 We belong to Jesus.

A healthy church begins with believers who never forget whose they are.

❤️ 2. Display Christlike Character

Church unity isn't held together by programs, policies, or personalities.

It's held together by people who are becoming more like Jesus.

Paul highlights several qualities every Christian should be growing in:

• 🌱 Humility
• 🤝 Gentleness
• ⏳ Patience
• 💙 Forbearance
• ❤️ Love

These aren't just nice personality traits.

They're evidence that the gospel is changing us.

Here's something worth remembering...

Most churches aren't damaged by one huge event.

They're weakened little by little.

One harsh comment.

One offended spirit.

One unresolved conflict.

One selfish decision.

One critical conversation.

Paul tells us to be "endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."

Notice he doesn't tell us to create unity.

✨ God has already done that.

Our responsibility is to protect it.

Every conversation...

Every response...

Every social media post...

Every interaction...

Either strengthens or weakens what God is building.

🏛️ 3. Rest in Our Shared Foundation

Why is unity worth protecting?

Because we have so much in common.

Paul repeats one word seven different times:

One.

☝️ One body.

☝️ One Spirit.

☝️ One hope.

☝️ One Lord.

☝️ One faith.

☝️ One baptism.

☝️ One God and Father of all.

Our personalities are different.

Our backgrounds are different.

Our preferences are different.

But those things aren't what define us.

What unites us is infinitely greater than anything that could divide us.

When we keep Jesus at the center, secondary issues stay secondary.

That's how healthy churches remain healthy.

🚧 Protect What God Is Building

Have you ever noticed all the cones, fences, and warning signs around a construction site?

They're not there to inconvenience people.

They're there because something valuable is being built.

The church is even more valuable.

💒 It was purchased with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

This week, ask yourself one simple question:

Did I merely attend church... or did I strengthen it?

Every encouraging word.

Every act of kindness.

Every patient response.

Every decision to forgive.

Every choice to put someone else ahead of yourself.

Each one helps protect what God is building.

🏗️ Let's be builders, not dividers.

✝️ Have You Answered God's Call?

Paul's message is written to people who have already answered God's call by trusting Jesus Christ.

But perhaps you've never taken that step.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus came to save sinners.

He lived the perfect life we could never live.

He died on the cross for our sins.

He rose again three days later so that anyone who turns to Him in faith can receive forgiveness and eternal life.

You cannot protect the unity of God's family until you become part of God's family.
